Booker Statement on Fatal ICE Shooting of Woman in Minneapolis
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement:

“The shooting of a woman in Minnesota today by ICE is a horrible tragedy.

“As Mayor I've overseen a police department of over a thousand officers. From everything I've seen so far, this killing was avoidable and shouldn’t have happened. This is especially troubling because law enforcement officers are routinely trained in deescalation techniques and the use of less lethal force to prevent harm and protect the public. There needs to be a thorough, independent investigation, and there should be full accountability.

“I am deeply concerned that DHS’s practices will lead to more tragedies. All evidence indicates that hiring standards have been lowered, training is inadequate, and internal controls are insufficient. These conditions have allowed agents to operate without proper oversight, and, in some cases, unlawfully.

“Secretary Noem has refused to come before the Judiciary Committee, and DHS has failed to provide answers that I and others have been demanding  about their operations and personnel.

“Republicans in the Senate must not continue to surrender Congress’ oversight responsibility or shirk our constitutional duty to hold this administration accountable. Secretary Noem must come before the Judiciary Committee for a hearing focused on the conduct of ICE agents.”
