| WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy, and Consumer Rights, issued the following statement:
“Donald Trump’s nomination of megadonor David MacNeil to the Federal Trade Commission’s recent vacancy is yet another blatant example of the administration’s corruption and pay-for-play politics. Instead of prioritizing consumer protection and fair competition practices that drive down costs at a time when Americans are facing skyrocketing prices, Trump is rewarding a billionaire donor who helped bankroll his campaign. “Trump’s treatment of the Federal Trade Commission speaks volumes about his disregard for the agency’s mission. He unlawfully fired experienced, qualified, antitrust attorneys, Rebecca Slaughter and Alvaro Bedoya, and is now nominating Mr. MacNeil, chief executive of a floor mat manufacturing company who has no antitrust or legal experience whatsoever to qualify him for this post. “Even more troubling are the serious conflicts of interest this nomination presents. If Mr. MacNeil retains leadership or equity in his company while serving at the FTC, it would severely undermine impartial enforcement and erode public confidence in the agency. The FTC must act as an independent watchdog, not a landing spot for wealthy donors whose business interests may come before the public good. “This nomination raises serious concerns about conflicts of interest and reinforces what Americans already know: Donald Trump governs for the wealthy and well-connected, not for consumers or small businesses who need a fair, impartial FTC focused on creating a more affordable economy for consumers. “I urge Congress, in exercising its advice and consent authority, to scrutinize Mr. MacNeil’s nomination and ensure that the next FTC Commissioner will aggressively enforce our nation’s antitrust laws, promote robust competition in our economy, lower prices for American families, and vigorously protect consumer rights.” ### |
