Former NJ AG Matthew J. Platkin Launches Platkin LLP

State Senate President Steve Sweeney called for the governor’s chief counsel Matt Platkin to resign over the mishandling of sexual assault charges brought by Katie Brennan against Al Alvarez, another state worker, according to a Press of Atlantic City story.

As New Jersey Attorney General, Platkin spearheaded over 40 lawsuits against the Trump administration, including multi-state actions challenging federal policies on issues from environmental protections to gun reform, federal funding cuts and firings

Former New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin today announced the launch of Platkin LLP, mission-driven law firm founded by Platkin and a team of senior litigators from the AG’s office who have led some of the nation’s most consequential legal fights against big technology, for gun violence prevention and democracy protection.

As democratic norms are tested, public safety is under threat, and powerful corporations and institutions increasingly evade accountability, the firm is designed to step in where others step back, bringing high-impact, precedent-setting cases that protect the public and strengthen the rule of law. Against a background of political and institutional volatility, Matthew Platkin is among the rare leaders building a law firm dedicated to challenging those in power, including the current administration.

“I am excited to launch Platkin LLP, a mission-driven law firm alongside colleagues from the AG office to hold the world’s most powerful corporations and institutions accountable when they break the law and harm the public. In big moments that call for decisive action, I have never been one to sit on the sidelines, not as Attorney General and not now,” said Matthew J. Platkin, Founding Partner of Platkin LLP. “During my tenure as Attorney General, I used the law to drive meaningful change in the face of injustice. Now, through high-stakes litigation and investigations, we will continue to fight against powerful wrongdoers to protect residents, communities, and democracy. Platkin LLP is built for this very moment.”

The founding team of Platkin LLP brings deep experience from the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, in addition to litigating both in government and in private practice. The team has handled complex, high-stakes litigation involving public corruption, corporate accountability, gun safety, emerging technology, and holding the current administration accountable. Joining Platkin at the firm will be:

  • Angela Cai, Partner: Angela is a seasoned appellate advocate and former Deputy Solicitor General of New Jersey who helped build the state’s Office of the Solicitor General into an elite practice. She has drafted and argued hundreds of cases across state and federal courts, earned two NAAG Best Brief Awards for U.S. Supreme Court work, and clerked on the Third Circuit.

  • Ravi Ramanathan, Partner: Ravi represents clients in high-stakes complex litigation, drawing on senior government experience leading groundbreaking civil enforcement initiatives. As the inaugural Director of New Jersey’s SAFE Office, he led the nation’s first state-level civil firearms enforcement program, bringing more affirmative lawsuits against the gun industry than any other attorney general’s office.

  • Aaron Haier, Counsel: Aaron represents public- and private-sector clients in complex consumer protection and unfair competition matters. He previously served as Senior Counsel to the New Jersey Attorney General, advising on consumer protection, tech accountability, and antitrust enforcement.

  • Jaeliaya Troche, Executive Assistant: Jaeliaya has  experience supporting senior leadership across public and private sectors in fast-paced, high-visibility environments. She most recently provided high-level executive support at the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General.

The firm’s approach reflects Platkin’s tenure as attorney general: disciplined, strategic, and grounded in a belief that the law is one of the strongest tools available to protect the public interest. Platkin LLP is dedicated to representing diverse clients including governments, individuals, organizations, nonprofits, labor unions, among others and will cover a variety of cases including consumer protection, antitrust, securities, healthcare, environmental. In addition to impact litigation, the firm will advise on complex civil litigation, appeals, independent investigations and monitorships, and crisis management.

“AG Platkin is one of our great strategic litigators and anti-corruption champions. Those two roles merged as he helped lead the state AGs in their successful campaign to push back on year one of Trump's authoritarianism in both the court of law and in the court of public opinion,” says Amb. Norm Eisen, founder Democracy Defenders Fund & Obama WH ethics czar. “And proving his nonpartisan credibility, he also helped lead the fight against corruption in New Jersey at the same time! All of us in the democracy and reform community are thrilled that he will be continuing the fight in his new role.”
