Gloucester Township Republicans Thank Assemblyman Kanitra for Leadership, Condemn Governor Sherrill and LD4 Democrats for Misleading “Ratepayer Relief” Announcement
Gloucester Township, NJ — The Gloucester Township Republicans today praised Assemblyman Paul Kanitra (R-Ocean) for his strong leadership in highlighting the shortcomings of Governor Mikie Sherrill’s recently announced electric bill credit program, while sharply criticizing the Governor and local LD4 Democrats for engaging in deceptive political spin amid ongoing energy affordability and reliability challenges.
In the wake of severe storms over the Independence Day weekend that left tens of thousands of New Jersey residents without power for days in dangerous heat, Governor Sherrill held a press conference promoting what she described as steps toward “building an affordable energy future.”
Among the measures highlighted was a continuation of an electric bill credit program originally initiated under the Murphy administration. However, the Governor failed to disclose that this so-called “$90 million investment in affordability” had been slashed by 75%, reducing the one-time credit from $100 to just $25 per customer.
Assemblyman Paul Kanitra rightly called out the inadequacy of this measure, stating: “When your electric bill is $500 or $600 a month and you don’t have power in the sweltering heat, $25 bucks means nothing.” He further noted that the credit “doesn’t even cover a fast-food bill for a family, let alone deliver ratepayer relief or increase grid reliability.”
“Gloucester Township Republicans commend Assemblyman Kanitra for speaking the truth and standing up for New Jersey families who are struggling with soaring energy costs and unreliable service,” said Elizabeth Pfeffer, Chairwoman of the Gloucester Township Republicans.
“Governor Sherrill and the LD4 Democrats — Senator Moriarty, Assemblymen Hutchison and Miller — owe the public more than rebranded half-measures and empty rhetoric. This is not meaningful relief; it is political deception that fails to address the real challenges facing our communities.”
The organization emphasized that New Jersey residents deserve substantive solutions focused on grid reliability, lower costs, and responsible energy policy — not photo opportunities or recycled programs with diminished benefits. Low-income assistance was also significantly reduced under the current administration, further underscoring the gap between Democratic promises and results.
The Gloucester Township Republicans remain committed to advocating for fiscal responsibility, transparent governance, and policies that put hardworking families first. The organization calls on Governor Sherrill, Senator Moriarty, Assemblymen Hutchison and Miller, and their Democratic colleagues to abandon failed strategies and pursue genuine, effective relief for all New Jersey ratepayers.
