Hamawy Victorious in CD-12

A win by Dr. Adam Hamawy in CD-12 mangled the fortunes of New Jersey's so-called Democratic Party establishment, who couldn't keep fractured pieces together under an onslaught into Central Jersey by progressive leaders captained by Bernie Sanders and AOC.

The larger implications of Hamawy winning on the heels of the fellow Bernie-backed Analilia Mejia winning a special election in CD-11 and the Democratic Primary election tonight, factored into the developing 2028 prez race.
If AOC runs for President to carry on the national movement focused by Bernie, she now has a couple of key allies here in Hamawy and Mejia, or so ran the thinking among power players trying to maintain a grasp on some semblance of party coherence, and organization relevance.
Of course, the breakup of the lines and the mad rush of contenders into the breach made that candidate who could consolidate the progressive lane (the same way Mejia did in the crowded 11th) the favorite, and it turned out that way for Hamawy.
"Dammit, now they're [the GOP] is going to make that guy the face of the [Democratic] Party," an establishment source griped to InsiderNJ, hinting at Hamawy's past association with the Blind Sheikh and the damage he said it would do to a party trying to keep pro-Israel Democrats in the ranks. Of course, it was more complicated, as Democrats tried to subscribe more frequently to a pro-Israel, anti-Netanyahu policy, even as the complexity threatened layup messaging.
Still, for all that, it was Hamawy's night, who notwithstanding the supposed fracturing of the party caused by the end of bracketing, throughout the primary season did the best job of pulling together his base voters and the progressive wing of the party to create and lead a real coalition. Hamawy, moreover, offered a compelling and heroic story of public service as a retired Army combat surgeon who saved the life of U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth and was trapped in Gaza trying to save lives.
The endorsements poured in, making it difficult as the days went by for any of the other candidates to gain a lane.
The backers of Hamawy included:
U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, Rep. Summer Lee, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, Rep. Delia Ramirez, Rep. Ilhan Omar, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rep. Pramila Jayapal, Rep. Ro Khanna, Rep. Maxwell Frost, Rep. Lateefah Simon, Rep. Robert Garcia, Rep. Chuy Garcia, Rep. Jill Tokuda, former Rep. Jamaal Bowman, former Rep. Keith Ellison, former NJ-12 candidate Elijah Dixon, and State Rep. Chris Rabb. He was also endorsed by over 30 organizations, including the Sunrise Movement, PAL Pac, Congressional Progressive Caucus PAC, National Nurses United, Jewish Voice for Peace Action, US Campaign for Palestinian Rights Action, Track AIPAC, Common Defense, A New Policy PAC, Veterans for Responsible Leadership, Our Revolution, Climate Revolution Action Network, CAIR Action, Hindus for Human Rights Action, Emgage Action, and the Christopher Street Project.
