Matt Clarkin Stepping Down as Parsippany Democratic Committee Chair

10 years ago, at the age of 24, I took on the role of Parsippany Democratic Committee Chair with three goals in mind. I wanted our party to flip the Mayor’s office. I wanted our party to flip the Township Council. And I wanted an open and participative place in our party for our township’s minority communities, particularly our large Indian community. With all of those goals now accomplished, I will be stepping down as Chair upon the election of a successor this Saturday.
Our team has taken Parsippany from a Republican town to one that now leans Democratic. That matters for good, inclusive government in Parsippany, as our elected officials are already demonstrating. And it matters for the larger structure of our county and our state. There is no flipping Morris County blue without big victories in Parsippany, and there are no Republican victories in New Jersey without Morris County. Our success in 2025 confirmed the hard-won shift in Parsippany, and I’m proud of everyone who’s participated in those efforts. It doesn’t matter if you’re new or longstanding, it doesn’t matter if you’re a formal committee member or not. We achieved real change in this community together.
Now, I’m excited to pass the torch to a new leader chosen by our committee. Thank you for all of your hard work, and thank you for your confidence in me. I see a bright future for the Parsippany Democrats ahead!
Mayor Pulkit Desai offered the following message:
Congratulations and thank you to Matt Clarkin for his years of service as Chair.
Leadership is often measured not by the titles we hold, but by the opportunities we create for others. Over the past decade, Matt helped build a more inclusive and participatory organization that welcomed new voices into the process and encouraged greater engagement from communities that had not always seen themselves represented.
One of the most significant accomplishments of Matt's tenure was helping create pathways for a new generation of leaders, including people from diverse backgrounds, to step forward and serve. The election of Parsippany's first Indian-American Mayor and the increasing representation of our township's diverse communities did not happen by accident. It was the result of years of relationship-building, outreach, and a belief that leadership should reflect the community it serves.
Thank you to Matt for your dedication, your friendship, and your commitment to Parsippany. His efforts helped shape a historic chapter in our township's story, and I wish him continued success in whatever comes next.
The measure of leadership is not what we accomplish for ourselves, but what we inspire others to accomplish after we're gone. Matt's legacy will be found in the leaders he helped develop, the barriers he helped break, and the doors he helped open for future generations.
