MAYOR BARAKA STATEMENT HONORING DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.

"Martin Luther King Jr. promoted peace – while clearly proving that peace is not a passive proposition. Stabbed once, jailed 29 times, and putting his life on the line every single day, Dr. King embodied the kind of wide, unencumbered perspective and self-directed focus we need for today’s challenges.

"It is almost 58 years since Dr. King formed a direct civil rights alliance with the people of Newark and visited my father at my childhood home. Let us honor him today by recognizing ourselves in each other, infusing our convictions with effort, and choosing actions that forward justice and peace. Let us be living testaments to his words:

'Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice.

Justice at its best is love correcting everything that stands against love.'
