MAYOR RAS J. BARAKA STATEMENT ON PASSING OF JESSE JACKSON 

“I was still a teenager when Jessie Jackson set out on his historic journey to become president. He lifted the hopes and dreams of many Americans and stood tall for Black people everywhere. Without his trailblazing there would be no President Barack Obama.

“Jesse’s life altered history and left us a lasting legacy. He shouted, marched, strategized, organized, and inspired throughout the civil rights movement. His impact will forever be felt. But most importantly, he was a friend to my father and our family. I will always remember their rallying cry, ‘It’s Nation Time!”
