Mayor Solomon Appoints Sarah Levine as Jersey City Corporation Counsel
Experienced Civil Rights Attorney and Former Deputy Attorney General to Lead City's Law Department
JERSEY CITY, NJ (January 20, 2026) – Mayor James Solomon today announced the appointment of Sarah Michael Levine as Corporation Counsel for the City of Jersey City, effective January 26, 2026. As the City's chief legal officer, Levine will oversee all legal affairs for the municipality and serve as principal legal advisor to the Mayor, City Council, and all municipal departments.
"Sarah’s combination of legal excellence, public service, and deep roots in Jersey City makes her the ideal person to lead our Law Department," said Mayor James Solomon. "Her track record of taking on complex cases and winning, her experience as a Deputy Attorney General, and her commitment to fighting for working families align perfectly with our administration's values. Sarah understands that the Corporation Counsel must be a strong legal advisor, an effective manager, and a tireless advocate for Jersey City residents."
Levine brings extensive experience in civil rights and labor law, public entity representation, and complex litigation to the role. A Jersey City Heights native who currently lives in Ward F, she previously served as a Deputy Attorney General of New Jersey and Assistant Attorney General for Washington, D.C. In those roles, she has taken on and won high-profile cases involving consumer protection, tax enforcement, labor rights, and more.
Throughout her career, Levine has demonstrated a commitment to holding powerful interests accountable. She has successfully litigated cases against major corporations including Amazon for misleading consumers, pursued billionaires for failing to pay income taxes, represented workers exploited by their employers, and fought the federal government to obtain Guantanamo prisoner records under freedom of information laws.
"I am honored to serve my hometown as Corporation Counsel," said Sarah Michael Levine. "Jersey City is a dynamic, diverse city that deserves a Law Department that is both excellent and accountable. I look forward to working with Mayor Solomon, the City Council, and all city departments to provide sound legal guidance, manage litigation effectively, and ensure that our city government operates with integrity and in the best interests of all residents."
Locally, Levine has been a leading advocate for housing justice, playing a key role in passing Jersey City's Right to Counsel legislation and the ban on rent-fixing algorithms—reforms that protect tenants and promote affordable housing.
A proud product of Jersey City public schools, Levine is a graduate of McNair Academic High School. She earned her undergraduate degree from Barnard College and her law degree from Yale Law School. She is an active member in good standing of the New Jersey State Bar.
As Corporation Counsel, Levine will manage the City's Law Department, oversee all civil litigation, draft and review ordinances and contracts, and provide legal counsel on municipal policy.
