NJOHSP Promotes Public Awareness and Safety Ahead of Upcoming Major Events

HAMILTON, NJ – The New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness (NJOHSP) today announced an enhanced statewide “See Something, Say Something” public awareness campaign to encourage residents and visitors to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity as the state prepares to host historic events in June and July – FIFA World Cup 2026™, Sail4th 250, and other America250 celebrations.
“As our state prepares to welcome the world to these major events and extraordinary celebrations, protecting residents and guests remains paramount,” said NJOHSP Director Thomas Hauck. “Large scale events bring surging crowds, heightened travel, and extended exposure to our communities. We’re calling on everyone—locals and tourists alike—to serve as additional watchful partners, to be our eyes and ears. If you observe unusual behavior, notify authorities immediately. Your attentiveness and swift response bolster law enforcement capabilities to maintain security for all.”
NJOHSP’s “See Something, Say Something” campaign reinforces the importance of public vigilance during major events and provides clear guidance on how to report suspicious activity.
The expanded initiative features:
- A video public service announcement from Director Hauck addressing security protocols for public venues, transportation systems, and large gatherings. The announcement highlights collaboration with law enforcement and government partners at every level, as well as communities across New Jersey, including those that are faith-based.
- A coordinated social media campaign to deliver awareness graphics, reporting resource links, and event-specific reminders across NJOHSP platforms.
- A social media toolkit for law enforcement agencies, event partners, and community stakeholders to further extend the campaign’s reach.
The U.S. is hosting the FIFA World Cup 2026™, which is expected to be the largest sporting event in world history. New York/New Jersey Stadium (MetLife Stadium) in East Rutherford will host eight World Cup matches, including the final on July 19, which is projected to reach 3.2 billion viewers worldwide. More than 1.2 million visitors are expected to travel to the New York and New Jersey region for these matches.
Simultaneously, the region will showcase Sail4th 250 as part of America’s Semiquincentennial Celebration honoring the nation’s 250th birthday. The maritime spectacular will feature the largest international flotilla of tall ships and naval vessels assembled for a U.S. commemorative event. An estimated eight to 10 million spectators are expected to line the 15-mile New York/New Jersey shoreline to view the July 4th nautical parade. Communities throughout New Jersey will host additional public events in celebration of the anniversary.
These enhanced efforts align with NJOHSP’s annual “Secure the Shore” initiative, which coordinates heightened security along New Jersey’s beaches, boardwalks, and coastal communities from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The combination of major international events and peak summer tourism underscores the importance of public vigilance throughout the season.
NJOHSP emphasizes that suspicious activity includes behavior that appears unusual or out of place, such as unattended packages, unauthorized access to restricted areas, unusual surveillance, or individuals asking inappropriate questions about security procedures. New Jersey residents and visitors are encouraged to report suspicious activity through the following channels:
- Call: 1-866-4-SAFE-NJ (1-866-472-3365)
- Email: tips@njohsp.gov
- Online: https://www.njohsp.gov/seesay
Individuals can also report suspicious activity to their local police department.
