Reynolds-Jackson Introduces Bill to Tax Payments from Trump’s Anti-Weaponization Fund

Among the first-of-its-kind in the country, the legislation would impose 100% state income tax on New Jersey recipients of federal compensation program

(TRENTON) — Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson introduced legislation today that would impose a 100% New Jersey state income tax on any payments received through President Donald Trump’s $1.8 billion Anti-Weaponization Fund. Bill A5196, one of the first-of-its-kind in the country, would effectively eliminate any net financial benefit for recipients residing in New Jersey.

The fund was established to compensate individuals who claim they were targeted by the Biden administration and Democratic officials as victims of political “weaponization” and “lawfare.” Critics have raised concerns that individuals connected to the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, including New Jersey residents who were charged and later pardoned, could potentially benefit from the program.

“Families across our state are struggling with the cost of housing, groceries, and health care,” said Assemblywoman Reynolds-Jackson (D-Hunterdon, Mercer). “New Jersey taxpayers should not be asked to bankroll payments to individuals who attacked police officers, stormed the U.S. Capitol, or now claim they deserve compensation for facing the consequences of their actions.”

Under Assemblywoman Reynolds-Jackson’s proposal, any payment distributed through the Anti-Weaponization Fund to a New Jersey resident would be subject to a 100% state income tax, effectively eliminating any financial gain from the program.

“Whether you call it ‘weaponization,’ ‘lawfare,’ or something else,” Assemblywoman Reynolds-Jackson added. “If someone receives money through this program, they should expect to pay every dollar of it back.”

Similar legislation is reportedly under consideration in California and New York. Assembly members Ravi Bhalla and Katie Brennan also sponsored Bill A5196.
