Senator Wimberly: Muslim Families Deserve More Than Mourning

Following a shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego that left 3 people dead, Senator Benjie E. Wimberly (D-35) released the following statement:

"Three men were killed at San Diego’s largest mosque on Monday in an act of violence and Islamophobia carried into a space built for refuge and prayer. What should have been an ordinary day of worship was ruptured by grief, leaving families to face absence where there should have been presence, and children to learn fear where they were taught peace.

"This is not an isolated tragedy nor a passing headline. It is a hate crime that exposes the cost of unchecked anti-Muslim rhetoric and the way Islamophobia takes root in public life. Muslim communities should not have to negotiate for safety inside their own sanctuaries. Muslim families deserve more than sympathy in the aftermath; they deserve consistent protection, accountability, and the basic assurance that they can gather, pray, and exist without fear. Our Muslim neighbors deserve a country where prayer does not require courage, and where protection is not conditional on survival."
