Sherrill Before the Storm: 'We're Going to be Ready'

Storms can be trouble for new governors.

Just ask Phil Murphy. It was mid-November, 2018 - 10 months into his first term - when a surprising snow and ice storm clogged state roads for hours. Up and down the state, there were multiple accidents and harrowing tales of people stranded on highways for hours.

Going forward, the now former governor responded by overreacting a bit - declaring a "state of emergency" whenever the forecast called for clouds. Yes, we're being a bit facetious. Still, over-preparing is better than under-preparing.

So now, two days into Mikie Sherrill's tenure as governor, reports say a major storm will hit New Jersey this weekend, bringing up to a foot of snow to some parts of the state.

Sherrill appeared Thursday morning on MS NOW to talk about her new job. There were questions about affordability, ICE (not the weather variety) and also, the predicted storm.

"We're going to be ready," she said.

The governor said that even on inauguration day, Tuesday, she was mapping strategy on how to deal with the storm. That included talks with local emergency management personnel.

New Jersey, as all know, is a home rule state where government responsibilities are clearly delineated among various levels.

Sherrill had that in mind when she encouraged local officials to make sure they have enough road salt. She said:

"Go get your salt. We got the state roads. You guys got the county and municipal roads."

Preparation or not, Sherrill added:

"That said, I would encourage everyone ... to have a great family day at home this weekend, play some board games. Don't go out in this. Stay off the streets if you can."

That was the last part of today's interview.

Earlier,  Sherrill was much less folksy in talking about the presence of ICE in New Jersey and across the country.

"It is now fully a militia that Trump is running," she said, condemning masked ICE agents and the specter of them entering homes without warrants.

She referred to reports of agents taking a loyalty oath to President Trump and not the Constitution.

"Imagine somebody knocking down your door for God knows what reason," she said.

"This is the militia on the street and I will tell you every single American should be against this. This is against our Constitution."
