Speaker Coughlin Congratulates Governor Sherrill and Welcomes the Start of Her Administration

Speaker applauds Gov. Sherrill's actions to rein in utility costs, keeping affordability for NJ ratepayers front and center

“Today, New Jersey turns the page and begins a new chapter under the leadership of Governor Mikie Sherrill and Lieutenant Governor Dale Caldwell. The people of New Jersey placed their trust in them to lead our state forward, and that trust carries both great promise and great responsibility. Throughout their careers, both Governor Sherrill and Lieutenant Governor Caldwell have demonstrated a strong commitment to listening and acting with purpose.

“I know that they will build on the progress we have made and meet what lies ahead with great focus and determination. I’m confident of their success. I look forward to working with them and with all members of the new administration as we take on the responsibility we share to make New Jersey more affordable and to ensure every family has a fair shot at opportunity. On behalf of the New Jersey General Assembly, I congratulate Governor Sherrill, Lieutenant Governor Caldwell, and their families, and I wish them success as they begin their first term.

“Furthermore, affordability remains one of the greatest challenges facing New Jersey families, and rising electric utility bills have put real pressure on household budgets across our state. As we continue the work already underway in the Assembly to confront rising energy costs, I applaud Governor Sherrill for honoring her promise to freeze PJM’s utility rate hikes on July 1, and for promoting new, in-state energy generation in an effort to lower costs for ratepayers.

“Addressing the rising cost of utilities in New Jersey requires both short-term action and long-term solutions to stabilize costs for all ratepayers, and we will continue to work towards our all-of-the-above approach to generating new electric capacity, holding our regional grid operator accountable and lessening unnecessary bureaucratic red tape in partnership with the Governor in order to bring meaningful, lasting relief to households across our state.”
