Statement from Brendan Gill on Donald Trump’s Termination of Temporary Protected Status for Haitians

"As someone who is part of an immigrant household, immigration is not an abstract issue to me. It is about real families, real sacrifices, and the constant uncertainty too many people live with every day. That is why Donald Trump’s decision to terminate Temporary Protected Status for Haitian immigrants is so deeply wrong.

"Haiti continues to face extraordinary instability, violence, and humanitarian crisis. Ending TPS does nothing to improve conditions there. It only puts tens of thousands of families who have built lives, paid taxes, and contributed to our communities at risk of deportation to unsafe conditions.

"TPS holders are our neighbors, coworkers, healthcare workers, and small business owners. They strengthen our economy and our communities every single day. We should not be turning our backs on them.

"I stand with the Haitian community and with all immigrant families who deserve dignity, safety, and fairness. In Congress, I will fight to protect TPS holders and push for permanent solutions that reflect our values and our responsibilities."
