Statement from Councilwoman Crystal Feliciano on Governor Mikie Sherrill’s Budget Address and Transitional Aid
Today, I, along with many others, watched Governor Mikie Sherrill’s budget address. First, I’d like to thank the Governor for beginning an important conversation about fiscal responsibility and the future direction of our state. As a Councilwoman At -Large in the Capital City, our financial stability is extremely important and must be actively monitored by all in elected positions to best serve the people.
As we know, transitional aid is very important for the city of Trenton, especially because a significant amount of properties here limit our local tax base, yet we still are required to provide services not only to our residents here in the city, but also to those who work, visit, and have businesses here.
The Governor’s focus on fiscal discipline and long-term sustainability is important. At the same time, it is equally important that the state recognizes the structural realities faced by urban municipalities like Trenton. Increasing and stabilizing transitional aid for municipalities that serve as economic and governmental hubs is essential to ensuring we can continue to provide public safety, infrastructure improvements, and quality-of-life services for our residents.
As we look to continue to move the city of Trenton forward, we must continue to expand our ratables, strengthen economic development, and create new opportunities for growth to reduce long-term dependence on transitional aid. However, while that work continues, the State of New Jersey's support remains vital.
I have reviewed the budget online at https://www.nj.gov/treasury/omb/publications/27bib/BIB.pdf; on page 19, it states that transitional aid to localities will increase by $94.6 million. I intend to speak with the city’s administration about what that means for Trenton and the difference between the amount applied for in our transitional aid application and the amount available, as we have learned today in the budget.
As Trenton’s Councilwoman At -Large, I look forward to working collaboratively with the Governor, the Legislature, the Administration, and our local partners to ensure that Trenton receives the resources necessary to remain strong, stable, and positioned for continued progress.
