Team Kearny Rallies Supporters to Get Out the Vote Ahead of Tuesday's Democratic Primary

KEARNY, NJ — Supporters spilled outside of Sabor Cuancano Cuisine in downtown Kearny on Saturday morning at a packed rally to get out the vote for the Team Kearny Democratic slate for town council.

Councilmen George Zapata, Dennis Solano, Stathis Theodoropoulos, and 3rd Ward candidate Sarah Bonilla are running a grassroots campaign, independent of the Hudson County Democratic machine, in the June 2nd primary election.

After the rally, supporters knocked close to 1,000 doors across town ahead of Tuesday's election.

“Team Kearny is out here fighting for you, the people of Kearny. We’re not in this for the county politicians, the big developers, or anyone else,” said 4th Ward Councilman Stathis Theodoropoulos.

“You can feel the energy in this room. Everyone here knows the stake of this race, and you all know how important it is to have independent voices in Town Hall,” said 1st Ward Councilman George Zapata. “Now let’s bring this home and get out the vote!”

“Talk to your neighbors and make sure they vote, because this race will shape the future of Kearny for years,” said 2nd Ward Councilman Dennis Solano. “We have to keep this town affordable, and that starts with getting Team Kearny elected this Tuesday.”

"I'm so grateful to everyone in this room who has shown up for this campaign," said 3rd Ward candidate Sarah Bonilla. “This is a real grassroots campaign, and we wouldn't be here without you.”

The candidates were joined at the rally by retiring 3rd Ward Councilwoman Eileen Eckel and Hudson County Commissioner Al Cifelli, who cited the need for independent thinkers, youthful energy, and proven problem solvers on the council.

Earlier this week, Zapata, Solano, and Theodoropoulos voted down a town budget proposal that would have grown Kearny's deficit to $14 million and caused a spike in property taxes next year once the savings run out. The team is fighting for a long-term plan that finds savings without draining Kearny's surplus.

The primary election is Tuesday, June 2, 2026.
