(WATCH) InsiderNJ Exclusive: Senator Troy Singleton on the Budget, Housing, and the Political Climate

MOORESTOWN - Senator Troy Singleton (D-7) today in his district office broke down the just passed and signed FY2027 Budget and outlined his affordable housing priorities in advance of the 2026 Governor’s Conference on Housing and Economic Development.
Singleton presented the budget he voted in favor of last night - on balance - as a virtue, which is to say, imperfect, but in the main, good.
"People are worn out, they're tired, they're angry, and frankly, they're trying to figure out 'how can I live a more affordable life?'" Singleton told InsiderNJ. "And they are looking for solutions to that, and I will say as a member of the Democratic Party, the idea of that solution can't be 'Don't vote for that person, vote for me because I'm not that person.' You have to give solutions to make people's lives better."
Chair of the Community and Urban Affairs Committee, Senator Singleton two years ago took the lead in the senate to create a less onerous process for municipalities to meet their Mount Laurel obligations. Creating affordable housing in New Jersey remains a top priority for the Senator, as he continues to work with Governor Mikie Sherrill on this critical issue. The Governor's Housing and Economic Development Conference is set for September 29–30 in Atlantic City.
Singleton in today's interview additionally discusses the StayNJ program, property tax relief, housing abatements, the supplemental bill that passed last night (which includes over $100 million in aid for Jersey City), the environment, and the political temper of the times in a midterm election year.
"At the end of the day, people want results," said the Burlington-based Senator. "They're tired, they're frustrated and they're going to look to people and say, 'Give me the action. What have you done?' If people are caught on the wrong side of that conversation, whether Democrat or Republican, they will be ex elected officials."
