We Condemn the Attack on Congresswoman Omar and the Hateful, Racist Rhetoric of Trump

U.S. Rep. Ilhan Abdullahi Omar (D-MN) appeared in Newark last year as part of a contingent of congressional colleagues from around the country in support of U.S. Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-10).

Serving as the U.S. representative for Minnesota's 5th congressional district since 2019, Congresswoman Omar last night sustained an attack during a Town Hall speech against the persistent backdrop of President Donald J. Trump calling her and Somali immigrants "garbage."

From MSN:

The video of the attack on Omar has gone viral. It shows her being sprayed by a person who charges at her when she's speaking, before security intervenes.

The assault on the Democratic Party member comes at a time when tensions are simmering in the state after Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good were killed by federal agents deployed by the Donald Trump administration. Omar has been critical of Trump and the president has slammed the Somali born lawmaker multiple times as well.

We at InsiderNJ condemn in the strongest terms the attack on this elected member of Congress, who, to her credit, saw in 2025 fit to come to our state in defense of one of our distinguished elected officials. We believe the federal government - Trump's Department of Justice - unjustly charged Congresswoman McIver as she attempted to fulfil her duties as an elected official in her home City of Newark and were happy to hear the Minnesota Congresswoman's voice righteously raised on McIver's behalf.

We also condemn, in the strongest terms, the hateful, vile, racist, and inciting rhetoric by the President of the United States that at best intensifies an atmosphere of incivility and intolerance in the United States of America, and at worst fosters the long-festering twin evils of injustice and violence.
