Senators Lunching in their Caucus Room Right Now

TRENTON – Ahead of a scheduled 2 p.m. meeting among Governor Phil Murphy, Senate President Steve Sweeney and Speaker Craig Coughlin, the senators lunched in their caucus room, ready for action in the event of any 225 West State Street developments.

Sweeney allies were reluctant at this point to say that the senate President will budge.

He did that yesterday, acquiescing, they say, by moving to choke down a mega millionaire’s tax.

Murphy didn’t approve.

Now, whatever the governor throws out there today in the way of a compromise proposal – if he even does – to nudge Sweeney closer to the original $1 million threshold likely won’t take.

They were done.

“Craig moved the big guy yesterday,” a source said, referring to Coughlin getting Sweeney to snap at a $5 million threshold.

If that’s true, that opens the greater likelihood for Murphy of a line item veto, which Republicans say they will join Sweeney allies to override.

The leaders stood at the edge of the next round of talks.
