Sherrill Assesses the Coming Elections

Mikie Sherrill is feeling very good about next week's midterm elections.

"I will be disappointed if we don't see significant gains," the governor said on Tuesday's "Ask the Governor" show on radio station WNYC.

The governor has travelled around the country campaigning for a number of Democratic candidates. To that end, she stressed the need for strong Democratic governors to stand up to Donald Trump.

She said she was very optimistic that Democrat Gina Hinojosa will win the governorship of Texas, citing how polls say the Latino vote will swing back to the Dems. In 2024, Trump's strength with Latinos was unprecedented for a Republican.

A Hinojosa win over Greg Abbott would be an upset. Most polls show that Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico has a better chance of winning in Texas.

As for New Jersey, Sherrill was very upbeat about CD-7, expressing hope that Rep. Tom Kean will soon be a former congressman.

Rebecca Bennett, the Democratic candidate, of course, is a former Navy helicopter pilot. That should sound familiar.

There's also CD-2. where Democrat Zack Mullock is trying to unseat Jeff Van Drew.

"He's a good guy," she said of Mullock.

The governor said the district, which includes much of south Jersey, is a tough one for Dems. But she said she was encouraged by early vote numbers.

So far in CD-2, registered Democrats are outvoting Republicans by about 29,200 to 16,000.

Trivia buffs will remember that Van Drew and Sherrill were both initially elected to Congress in 2018. Van Drew was then a Democrat, but he eventually switched parties. He ran as a Republican in 2020.

Aside from next week's election, the first call to the governor was about data centers.

She was asked about a data center moratorium.

Sherrill did not endorse a moratorium, but did say the state has adopted strong guidelines regarding data center development.

The governor was also asked by host Michael Hill about the resignation of Lieutenant Governor Dale Caldwell.

Most pointedly, one question had to do with why Sherrill many times left the state, leaving Caldwell as acting governor while he was under investigation.

The governor deflected the query, saying there was an independent investigation ongoing and that it would have been unfair to act on those findings before the probe was complete.

How about the new LG?

Caldwell is black. So, will the new lieutenant governor be a minority or a woman?

Sherrill said yes - well, sort of.

"I do think diversity in my administration is incredibly important," she said.

Immigration can not be ignored.

The governor was asked about a proposed ICE facility in Roxbury, which is in the courts. Still, there is evidence ICE has used the parking lot of the warehouse off Route 46 to process detainees.

Sherrill said the feds have now agreed to stop doing that, but she wasn't sure they could be trusted.

Instead of trust, but verify, the governor said the idea is to "verify and verify."
