Sherrill Campaigns with Mayor Green, 1199SEIU Workers in East Orange

EAST ORANGE - Rallying with 1199SEIU workers, Mikie Sherrill hit the streets this morning in this

1199.

Democratic Party-rich Essex County city as she looks to mobilize voters for her statewide gubernatorial candidacy.

In front of the historic City Hall here, Mayor Ted R. Green donned an SEIU t-shirt in a show of support for the labor union and for Sherrill.

The mayor noted his aversion to Republican Jack Ciattarelli's plan to overhaul Abbott schools funding, which he said would negatively impact East Orange by limiting school system resources and potentially hiking local property taxes.

Latenya King, 1199SEIU VP, told InsiderNJ that her workers back Sherrill in part because of the congresswoman's opposition to President Donald J. Trump's budget bill.

Said Sherrill's colleague earlier this year, ranking U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone (D-6):

“Unfortunately, both Medicare and Medicaid are now under attack by the Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans. President Trump’s Big Ugly Bill makes catastrophic cuts to both Medicare and Medicaid while taking health care away from millions of Americans all to give tax breaks to billionaires and large corporate interests. These disastrous cuts will shut down hospitals and nursing homes, force people to once again rely on emergency rooms for care, and leave millions buried in medical debt.

King told InsiderNJ, "We are here because Mikie Sherrill supports our healthcare workers in this fight against the big ugly bill, which drastically affects our members and residents. It's affecting everything we stand for. It's affecting people who can't afford groceries and who are killing themselves with overtime. Mikie Sherrill supports everything we stand for, and that's why we're out here knocking on doors to make sure she wins."
