Sherrill Highlights High Voter Turnout in Newark at First Gov-elect Presser

TRENTON - "Hi guys," Mikie Sherrill said upon entering her first press conference as governor-elect.
The Wednesday after an election is a time to look ahead - and Sherrill did that by naming her transition team leaders. (More about that later).
As she relished reflecting on the events of Tuesday night, Sherrill said simply:
"What I saw was our message resonated."
Her rather easy victory was built - obviously - on county by county success.
She spoke of encouraging the best turnout in Newark in 20 years.
And most of all, perhaps, she won Morris County by almost 2,000 votes. This is part of her congressional district, but it's been a traditional Republican stronghold. That may be changing and Sherrill is a big reason why.
She called that win, "seismic."
She was asked about the first 100 days of her administration - a traditional, but sometimes irrelevant, benchmark.
Sherrill spoke about an executive order to freeze utility rates, moving on a kids' safety agenda regarding social media and joining a legal battle against Donald Trump's tariffs.
Has she reached out to Trump? It was noted that Phil Murphy actually has had, at times, a constructive relationship with the president.
No, she has not. But she did say that when the time comes, she will push for resumption of Gateway Tunnel construction, a project Trump says he has "terminated" because of the government shutdown.
The governor-to-be was still a bit evasive about whether she will continue the immigrant trust directive, which limits cooperation between local police and ICE. She said she will do everything to keep people safe.
As for the transition, as team leaders she named Dale Caldwell, the incoming lieutenant governor, and Kellie Doucette who has worked with her since Sherrill first ran for Congress in 2018.
One election ends and another one starts - sometimes sooner than you think.
Sherrill, obviously, will soon resign her congressional seat and a bunch of Dems are lining up to fill it.
So far the list includes Brendan Gill of Essex County, John Bartlett of Passaic, Jeff Grayzel and Justin Strickland of Morris and Tom Malinowski, who formerly represented the neighboring CD-7.
Sherrill said it's unclear at this time when she will actually resign from Congress. The timing of her resignation will determine when the CD-11 election is held.
As for the House race to come, she said she did not expect to make an endorsement.
