Speaker Coughlin Statement on House Passage of GOP Budget Bill

Speaker Craig J. Coughlin issued the following statement in response to the House’s passage of the Republican budget bill that includes deep cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid:
“The bill House Republicans passed this morning under the cover of darkness is not just cruel—it’s morally wrong. It guts lifeline programs like Medicare, Medicaid and food assistance that millions of working families, children, seniors, and people with disabilities rely on every day. “Slashing billions from SNAP is irresponsible. It is an effort to take food off the tables of so many who are already struggling. Cutting billions from government health insurance programs will mean millions more lose access to health care, all while handing massive tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans. “And yet, New Jersey Republican Representatives Tom Kean Jr., Chris Smith, and Jeff Van Drew, voted in favor of the bill. They chose party over people. They chose giveaways to the ultra-wealthy over meals for hungry kids and medical care for working moms. We will keep fighting to protect the people this bill leaves behind because New Jersey families deserve better than to be sold out in the middle of the night.” |
