Ten Who Played: Where the Power Players Wagered Political Capital in Tuesday’s Competitive Elections

Governor Phil Murphy

He (pictured above left at Bob Menendez’s Friday fundraiser with Tiki Barber and U.S. Senator Cory Booker) insisted he was there for governmental reasons, but the Governor dropped into Bayonne on Friday to stand with incumbent Mayor Jimmy Davis, who’s in a real contest. Of course, the Governor ratified Newark Mayor Ras Baraka* back at the incumbent’s kickoff, and had also fundraised for him.

Menendez

Senator Bob Menendez

The Senator was with Davis in Bayonne at the incumbent’s kickoff – along with the Nick Sacco-Tom DeGise aligned Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO). He’s all in, and so are the Senator’s allies, guys like former Menendez State Directors Assemblyman Nick Chiaravalloti and Mike Soliman.

Labor Leader Ray Pocino

The Vice President and Eastern Regional Manager of the Laborers International Union was apparently not thrilled when the Governor appeared late in the game in Bayonne. Pocino’s with challenger former Assemblyman Jason O’Donnell. The Laborers are also playing heavily behind the candidacy of Long Branch Mayoral candidate John Pallone.

Civil Rights Leader Russell Graddy

The legendary Patersonian who marched with Martin Luther King, Jr. for equal rights on Saturday morning backed Sayegh for Mayor.

U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell

The veteran Congressman from Paterson told the Paterson Times that he voted for his longtime friend and ally, Ward 6 Councilman Andre Sayegh. The Congressman’s son, Bill Pascrell III, is also all-in with Sayegh.

Pallone
Pallone

U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone

The veteran Congressman from Long Branch showed up at a GOTV rally for his brother and spoke on his behalf in the closely-watched mayoral contest.

Carpenters Chief John Ballantyne

The powerful head of the Carpenters Union – along with political director Lizette Delgado Polanco, vice chair of the Democratic Party – backs O’Donnell in Bayonne, Walker Worthy in Trenton, and Sayegh in Paterson, and Pallone in Long Branch. The Carpenters chipped $8,200 in to Pallone, in fact.

Operating Engineers Leader Greg Lalevee

The leader of Engineers Local 825 backs Pallone for Mayor in Long Branch, Sayegh in Paterson, and O’Donnell in Bayonne. Stronger Foundations a PAC associated with the Engineers – is up on local television in Long Branch on behalf of Pallone. Lalevee stayed out of Trenton.

Hughes

Mercer County Executive Brian Hughes

The powerful county executive backs Deputy Clerk Worthy to succeed Eric Jackson as mayor of the City of Trenton.

Essex County Freeholder President Brendan Gill

The Governor’s top political adviser supports Sayegh for Mayor of Paterson. Dave Parano – who did field for Murphy in 017 – is leading the field effort for Sayegh in Paterson, among others in other Tuesday theaters.

For the record, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka has everyone on this list – and more, including the entire labor and Democratic Party establishment in Essex County, and both U.S. Senators (Mendez and Cory Booker) – behind him.
