NEWARK - Ensconced in the county offices here, Essex County Clerk Chris Durkin this morning broke down key processes of the 2026 general election.

Significantly, by a vote of 7-2, the United States Supreme Court earlier this month ruled against President Donald Trump's attempt to wrench voting by mail away from the states.

It should have been 9-0, Durkin told InsiderNJ, given the clearcut language in the Constitution empowering states - with congressional oversight - to govern federal elections.

The clerk laid out the timelines for vote by mail, early voting and November 3rd election day voting, and explained multiple voting safeguards employed both in Essex County and New Jersey.
