Abdelaziz Saves Man from Car Moments Before Vehicle Engulfed

From the Haledon PD: On October 11, 2025, at approximately 11:30AM, Haledon Police responded to 137 Barbour Street on a report of a motor vehicle crash with airbag deployment, in which visible signs of smoke was coming from the vehicle. Detective/Sergeant Semir Celoski who was off duty at the time went over the radio and stated for dispatch to expedite the Haledon Fire Department as the vehicle was now fully engulfed.

Upon arrival, Patrol Supervisor Sergeant Jake Rutkowski met with Detective/Sergeant Celoski who was in the middle of the road way with the driver later identified as Mr. Faquan Barnes as Officer Nasir Mora and Officer Antonio Parisi blocked off the roadway and walked to the scene to assist and render medical aid.

Mr. Barnes who showed signs of impairment stated he had consumed an illicit substance and had visible lacerations/abrasions to his arms. Mr. Barnes for his safety was placed under arrest as he continued to show aggressive behavior by slapping the pavement and yelling. Mr. Barnes was ultimately placed in Paterson Ambulance and transported to St. Joseph’s Medical Center in the City of Paterson for further medical evaluation.

Sergeant Rutkowski at this time was able to gather pertinent information from witnesses on scene.

Sergeant Rutkkowski spoke to State Assemblyman Alaa “Al” Abdelaziz who represents Haledon as part of the 35th Legislative District. Assemblyman Abdelaziz stated he witnessed the accident as he was traveling in front of the vehicle and saw the accident through his rearview mirror. He immediately made a U-turn to respond to the scene and observed smoke coming from the vehicle which had struck two parked vehicles. Assemblyman Abdelaziz swiftly went into action and with the assistance of Detective/Sergeant Celoski’s father Mr. Avmed Celoski and two unidentified Samaritans removed Mr. Barnes from the vehicle as it quickly became engulfed. Haledon Fire Department was able to quickly isolate the fire which had also affected the two parked vehicles it collided into.

Mr. Barnes was admitted to the hospital in stable condition and charged with being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance (disorderly persons offense).

Mr. Barnes was also issued motor vehicle summons for Driving While Intoxicated, Refusal to submit Chemical Test, Driving While Intoxicated within 1,000 feet of School Property, Reckless Driving, etc.

The suspect is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
