Assemblyman Wants Murphy to Declare a State of Emergency in and Around Newark (UPDATED, with Letter)

Assemblyman Jamel Holley (D-20) wants Governor Phil Murphy to declare a state of emergency for Newark and surrounding towns to confront lead contamination in the area’s water supply.

Sources say Holley has reached out to Newark, Belleville, Bloomfield and Hillside for support as he seeks Murphy’s attention to the crisis.

Holley, who represents Hillside – an impacted town – wants a state takeover of the City of Newark Water Department and dispatch of he NJ National Guard.
