Today, Brian Varela announced his No Negativity Pledge for New Jersey's 7th Congressional District Democratic primary, committing to run a campaign focused on issues, not attacks.

"Democrats can't waste time and energy tearing each other down when the fight to flip the House is too important," said Varela. "I'm committed to running on my vision for NJ-7. I will only respond if I'm attacked first, and if any untrue or unfair hit pieces come out about any of my opponents, I'll denounce them. This race should be about who can best represent working families and flip this seat, not who can throw the most mud."

Varela's pledge includes a commitment to avoid beginning any negative attacks, respond only when directly attacked, and publicly denounce any false or unfair attacks against his Democratic opponents, regardless of their source. Earlier in the race, Varela demonstrated his commitment to this principle of unity by donating $250 to every candidate as a show of cooperation and good faith. Varela is asking all of his opponents to join him on this no negativity pledge.

"We're all on the same team," Varela added. "Our focus should be on winning in November, not tearing each other apart before June. Tom Kean Jr. must be defeated if we are to have any chance of restoring sanity to Washington and attacking each other will seriously weaken us in that fight.
