Businessman Uribe in Menendez Case Pleads Guilty

Senator Bob Menendez

Breaking News this afternoon from CNN:

A New Jersey businessman who was indicted alongside New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez has pleaded guilty to charges related to the bribery scheme and is cooperating with federal prosecutors in the ongoing investigation.

Jose Uribe, who was indicted in the corruption scheme alongside the senator, his wife Nadine Menendez and two other businessmen, is the first person to plead guilty to the charges and the first insider to agree to cooperate with prosecutors.

From the Associated Press:

According to a plea agreement, Uribe could face up to 95 years in prison, though he could win leniency by cooperating and testifying against the other defendants, which he’s agreed to do.

Uribe was among three businessmen charged in the corruption case against the New Jersey Democrat and his wife, Nadine Menendez, which was revealed early last fall. Authorities say Menendez and his wife accepted bribes of cash, gold bars and the luxury car in exchange for his help and influence over foreign affairs.
