Congresswoman McIver: 'I'm Not Going to Stop Holding This Administration Accountable'

Today, a federal court in Newark, New Jersey, heard oral arguments in the ongoing criminal case against Congresswoman LaMonica McIver (NJ-10) brought by the Trump administration. The court reserved ruling on the Congresswoman’s motions to dismiss, but instructed the government to take down certain public statements negatively describing Rep. McIver, and to provide additional discovery, such as video footage and government policies. A spokesperson for the Congresswoman issued the following statement on today’s oral arguments:

“Today’s oral arguments were a pivotal step in exposing the methods by which Donald Trump’s government is targeting LaMonica McIver to punish her for doing oversight and standing up to protect her community. Rep. McIver’s lawyers laid out the basis for the court to dismiss the case based on two motions—one on Selective Enforcement and Prosecution and Vindictive Prosecution, and the other on Legislative Immunity. The judge did not rule on either of these motions from the bench, but announced he would issue a written opinion. While he did not rule formally on the other two motions to compel discovery and to restrain DHS and ICE from making false and defamatory statements about the Congresswoman, the court did instruct the U.S. Attorney’s office to provide additional discovery relevant to the case and take down certain public statements negatively describing Rep. McIver” said Hanna Rumsey, a spokesperson for Rep. McIver. “We remain firm: Rep. McIver is innocent and the prosecution is a blatant effort by the Trump administration target and intimidate her.”
