Lawmakers' Eyes Turn to Sunday while Staff Sorts Budget Deets

The New Jersey Statehouse and Capitol Building In Trenton

TRENTON - A source described the Trenton tension level as high at this point, while staff on deadline hammers out the dreaded details of the 2027 Budget.

Pencils have to drop tonight on those details (which include Governor Mikie Sherrill's legislative priorities) for the work to be printed in time for lawmakers to resume work on a marathon Sunday.

"Everyone's getting a haircut," an assembly source told InsiderNJ in reference to the restorations to both houses, resulting in mild temper tantrum throwing.

People react more favorably to Speaker Craig Coughlin's negotiated realignment with the Governor of StayNJ, summed up thus: "Those who make less get more, those who make more get less."

The bottom line here is when they say they have an agreement, they mean the top line, while the late sweat relates to the bottom line.

"I hope there are no snags," a semi-panicking source told InsiderNJ, watching the clock ahead of the June 30th constitutional deadline.

It's a waiting game while staff does the work, with all eyes on Sunday.
