LG Caldwell: New Jersey Refuses to be Scared by Trump Tactics

In the aftermath of President Donald Trump self-servingly injecting a pall of skepticism over elections ahead of the midterms, Lieutenant Governor Dale Caldwell strongly made the case for fair and safe elections here in the Garden State.
"The history of New Jersey includes one of the strongest election processes in the country," Caldwell told InsiderNJ, in the face of Trump's attempts to unconstitutionally federalize elections.
The Lieutenant Governor - who also serves as Secretary of State - said the strength of New Jersey elections hinges in part on the state's strong relationship with the 21 counties and open communication lines.
"What Trump is trying to do is scare people," said Caldwell. "We watch the VBM [vote by mail returns], and New Jersey is the safest in the country."

InsiderNJ asked the LG about the Legislature's passage of the John R. Lewis Empowerment Act, championed by Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds Jackson (D-15).
"For other states that act was a major change, while in New Jersey, our election practices are reinforced by the bill," Caldwell said.
It's personal for the LG, the great-great-great-great grandson of Bishop Morris Brown, one of the founders of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, an early American justice crusader, and precursor of John R. Lewis.
"I met John Lewis (see photos), and so this is near and dear to my heart," he said.
Part of what the Lieutenant Governor continues to do in his role as Secretary of State is to educate voters, through channels like the Eagleton Institute, to diminish the kind of misinformation spewed by Trump, to remind people about those who died for the American right to vote, and to emphatically let New Jerseyans know the process is safe.
