The ex-congresswoman, also a former Navy helicopter pilot and federal prosecutor, will become New Jersey’s 57th governor and make history as the state’s second female — and first Democratic woman — governor.

Sherrill, who turned 54 on Monday, will be sworn in alongside her running mate, Dale Caldwell, the former president of Centenary College who will become the state’s new lieutenant governor.

“For more than a year, I’ve been up and down this state and am on a mission to deliver for all New Jerseyans — lower costs, a better future for our kids, and a more transparent and accountable state government,“ Sherrill said in a statement. ”Leadership means listening to the people about what keeps them up at night — and we will start my administration the same way we won this race, by listening and taking action for the people I serve."

The location is notable: It’s only the second time since Trenton became the state’s capitol in 1790 that a New Jersey governor will take the oath of office elsewhere. Sherrill lives in Montclair, not far from Newark, the state’s largest city.
