Menendez and Dems try to Juggle Impeachment and Intractable World Crises

Democrats are trying hard to convince the political world they can “walk and chew gum” at the same time.

New Jersey’s Bob Menendez joined about 10 of his Senate colleagues at a press event today to make that precise point.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer set the tone, saying, “We can do both at once.” By that, he meant conduct an impeachment trial of Donald Trump while also moving the Biden Administration forward in regard to confirming Cabinet picks and putting together a COVID relief package.

And with the impeachment trial hours away, the chairs of various Senate committees assured one and all that their work is continuing.

Menendez, who now chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, stressed the worldwide impact of the virus.

“We understand the sense of urgency here,” said Menendez, who noted the obvious about the virus not respecting borders.

But he said the basic work of the committee goes on, mentioning the confirmation of Tony Blinken as Secretary of State.

And then he spoke of a recent closed-door committee meeting to review “hot spots” in the world.

Menendez’ cryptic comment about that was a simple one. He said he’s never seen the nation have as many challenges as it has today.
