Morris County Versus Newark

Newark City Hall

Anthony Somma is ready to take on the "Newark-Camden Democrat machine."

Somma lives in Randolph, which is Morris County, but for him, it's clearly the big picture that counts.

More than a year in advance of the June, 2027 primary, Somma on Monday announced his candidacy for the state Assembly in District 25.

In doing so, he condemned Democrats, but also presented some criticism of his fellow Republicans.

“Enough with career politicians and enough with Republicans who settle for table scraps. Itʼs gotten us nowhere. We wonʼt fix this state by quitting the fight. It's time to hit back. Itʼs time to make sure the state we grew up in will still be a place our own kids can call home.”

In a release, he said he would define his campaign thusly: Cut taxes, cut fees, and cut the burden on families; back law enforcement and protect our communities - no exceptions.

The district's incumbent Assembly members are Republican Aura Dunn and Democrat Marisa Sweeney, who won the seat last fall - the first Democrat to do so in more than 40 years.

Somma does not seem all that impressed with Sweeney. He said:

"The one-party control that has come to define Trenton became more lopsided and more extreme in 2025 when the 25th District elected a (Mikie) Sherrill sycophant to vote lockstep with the Newark-Camden Democrat machine. Our state deserves better than one-party rule and our district needs an Assemblyman who will stand-up and fight back - not fall in line. I will be that Assemblyman.”

Somma, a life-long resident of the 25th district, is a commissioner of the Morris County Housing Authority and vice chair of the Randolph Republican Committee.
