The NAACP New Jersey State Conference is aware of the reports concerning Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of State Dale Caldwell and the investigation reportedly being conducted by an outside law firm regarding allegations of inappropriate behavior involving women and possible ethics violations, including allegations concerning the purported offer of state employment. Reports indicate that former New Jersey Attorney General Christopher Porrino of Lowenstein Sandler is leading the inquiry.

We appreciate the Governor's stated position that reports of inappropriate behavior and misconduct must be taken extremely seriously and that public officials are expected to hold themselves to the highest standards. Governor Sherrill has also stated that she will take appropriate action quickly if the evidence warrants it.

At the same time, the NAACP believes deeply in due process and fairness. Allegations are not findings, and an investigation is not a determination of guilt or wrongdoing. We cannot abandon one another solely on the basis of accusations. We must allow the investigative process to proceed, allow the facts to be established, and respect the integrity of the inquiry.

Therefore, at this time, we will reserve judgment and refrain from taking a position regarding what further action should be taken concerning Lieutenant Governor Caldwell until the investigation has been completed and its findings are known.

If the investigation substantiates misconduct or violations of ethical obligations, we will reevaluate our position based upon the facts and the evidence. If the allegations are not substantiated, that outcome must likewise be respected.

The NAACP has always stood for accountability, transparency, fairness, and equal justice under the law. Those principles must apply consistently to everyone—including those who hold the highest offices of public trust.

We will watch this process closely, and we expect that the facts, evidence, and appropriate standards of public accountability will ultimately guide whatever action is warranted.
