Paterson Fire Officers Association Local 202 Backs Mendez

Paterson mayoral candidate Alex Mendez this week received the endorsement of the Paterson Fire Officers Association Local 202.
Mendez said the endorsement reflects Local 202’s call for new leadership, stronger accountability, and a renewed focus on public safety in Paterson.
In backing Mendez, the Paterson Fire Officers Association Local 202 pointed to a number of serious concerns affecting the city over the past eight years, including chronic staffing issues, rising grievances, unresolved contract disputes, and broader challenges impacting first responders and the residents they serve. The union also cited the city’s request for $78 million in state transitional aid, compared with $33 million in 2025, as further evidence of the challenges facing the city under the current administration.
Local 202 said its support for Mendez is rooted in his willingness to listen to those on the front lines and address the real issues affecting public safety, including staffing shortages, fair contract negotiations, and operational support for fire personnel.
Mendez said he is honored to have the support of the city’s fire officers and grateful for their confidence in his leadership.
“I am honored to receive the endorsement of the Paterson Fire Officers Association Local 202,” said Mendez. “Their support is especially meaningful because these are the men and women who serve on the front lines every day and understand firsthand the challenges facing our city. I thank them for their trust and support, and I remain committed to leadership that strengthens public safety, supports first responders, and delivers the accountability Paterson residents deserve.”
The endorsement from Local 202 adds to the momentum behind Mendez’s campaign as he continues to connect with residents, community stakeholders, and public safety advocates across Paterson ahead of Election Day.
