32BJ SEIU Endorses LaMonica McIver for Special Election for NJ’s 10th Congressional District

NEWARK, NJ —32BJ SEIU, the largest property services union in the country, with 15,000 members in New Jersey, announced today its endorsement of LaMonica McIver for the special election for New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District. Governor Phil Murphy called the special election for the 10th Congressional District to fill the vacancy left by Rep Donald Payne’s death in April. In its endorsement of McIver, 32BJ SEIU cited her record as a strong ally of labor during her time on the Newark City Council, including her support for 6,500 NJ commercial cleaners who were bargaining a new contract in 2023. The union also noted her strong support of efforts to win better working conditions at Newark Airport. 32BJ SEIU plans to mobilize all 4,700 of its members who currently reside in the 10th Congressional District to get out the vote for McIver. The endorsement comes after reviewing written questionnaires and conducting in-person candidate interviews.

“Throughout her time on the Newark City Council, LaMonica McIver proved herself to be a champion for workers’ rights and a true ally of labor,” said 32BJ SEIU Executive Vice President Kevin Brown. “Whether she was standing with our commercial cleaners as they negotiated their first post-pandemic contract or fighting with the union to improve working conditions at Newark Airport, McIver has long since proven she will always back working New Jerseyans. We are confident that she will further build worker power in Congress and we are fully prepared to mobilize all 4,700 of our members who live in the 10th Congressional District. 32BJ is proud to endorse this champion of working New Jerseyans.”

The Democratic Primary Election for the 10th Congressional District will be held on July 16 and the General Election will be held September 18.
