AC Casino Workers: 45 Years of Smoking at Casinos is More Than Enough, Time to Put Our Health First

Atlantic City, NJOn the 45th anniversary of the Casino Control Act that legalized gambling in New Jersey, Lamont White, co-leader of Casino Employees Against Smoking Effects (CEASE), issued the following statement:

“For 45 years, casino workers like us have worked tirelessly to make Atlantic City one of the top destinations in the country for people to gamble and enjoy themselves. We’re proud of the fact that we are the backbone of this industry and know that none of this would be possible without the labor of table game dealers, slot attendants, bartenders, waitstaff and many more.

“We love our jobs and want to see Atlantic City thrive. That’s why we continue to call on lawmakers and the industry to do right by us and finally get rid of indoor smoking in the casinos. Although we didn’t understand the serious dangers of secondhand smoke in 1977, every expert on health and clean air will now say that indoor smoking is a major public health concern and that keeping smoking in casinos only forces workers to choose between their health and their paycheck. If we want Atlantic City to be successful for another 45 years and beyond, it is time to do the right thing and get rid of indoor smoking.”
