Legislation Inspired by the New Jersey American Legion

Legislation (S-542) sponsored by Senator Steven Oroho to honor New Jersey’s veterans by renaming High Point State Park as High Point Veterans’ State Park has passed the Senate Environment and Energy Committee.

“The dedication of High Point Veterans’ State Park honors all of the heroes who have answered the call to protect our freedoms,” Oroho (R-24) said. “Our men and women in uniform, past and present, have made countless sacrifices for our country. It is my privilege to be able to pay respect and honor all New Jersey’s veterans through this legislation.”

In 1923, Colonel Anthony Kuser deeded his summer mountain estate at High Point to New Jersey for the purpose of creating a State Park to honor soldiers killed in World War I.

Kuser later donated $500,000 to erect a granite obelisk – the High Point Veterans’ Monument – at New Jersey’s highest peak within the park to honor all of New Jersey’s heroes who have fought for our country.

“High Point State Park was created to serve as a memorial for our war heroes,” added Oroho. “Adding ‘Veterans’ into the park name will ensure that the original intention is never forgotten. I’d like to thank New Jersey’s American Legion for their work in support of this effort.”

The legislation, which has bipartisan sponsorship in both houses of the Legislature, now heads to the full Senate for consideration.
