Assembly Public Safety & Preparedness Committee Chairman, Assemblyman Joe Danielsen calls for the Legislature to work towards climate change solutions after historic floods sweep New Jersey

(SOMERSET) - Yesterday, residents throughout the State experienced hazardous flooding during a thunderstorm that struck during the evening commute. Here in District 17, Piscataway faced significant flooding along Centennial Avenue, in Franklin, multiple roads were closed due to hazardous conditions, and in South Bound Brook, areas near Main Street ended up flooded. I have been in constant contact with local officials in all our LD-17 communities to coordinate efforts and offer the best assistance possible as we begin cleanup and recovery.

This historic flood event was not caused by a hurricane or major nor'easter, however. It was caused by a summer thunderstorm, which in some areas only produced 3 inches of rain. Despite that, however, we saw historic flooding, massive damage, and loss of life. It is clear that the ongoing climate crisis has significantly contributed to these events. Our state needs to begin making the critical investments and decisions required to protect our residents from the effects of climate change, which manifests in extreme flooding, harsher snowstorms, and extreme heat.

When the Legislature returns this fall, I hope that my colleagues join me in recognizing the unique existential threat Climate Change poses to New Jersey. By acknowledging that threat, we can begin working on the solutions needed to protect our constituents. We can no longer afford to wait.
