ATTORNEY GENERAL’S TASK FORCE INVESTIGATES DEATH OF
MAN IN POLICE CUSTODY IN OLD BRIDGE TOWNSHIP
OLD BRIDGE, N.J. –The Attorney General’s Shooting Response Task Force – which also investigates all deaths that occur in police custody – is conducting an investigation into a man’s death that occurred early this morning while the subject was in the custody of officers of the Old Bridge Police Department.
At approximately 12:51 a.m., officers of the Old Bridge Police Department were dispatched to the Stratford Apartments on Arcade Lane in Old Bridge in response to a 911 call reporting a man on drugs who was causing a disturbance inside a neighbor’s apartment. When officers arrived, they encountered the subject inside the neighbor’s apartment. The subject initially was combative and officers placed him in handcuffs. The subject subsequently became unresponsive. Officers began CPR and called for Emergency Medical Technicians, who continued CPR upon their arrival. The subject was pronounced dead inside the apartment at 1:46 a.m.
The subject has been identified as Frank Zampini, 49, who resided at the Stratford Apartments in Old Bridge. The investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time.
This investigation is being conducted pursuant to a law enacted in January 2019,Senate Bill 1036, which requires that the Attorney General’s Office conduct investigations of a person’s death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody.
