Bateman Bill to Help Clear the Air of Greenhouse Gases Clears Senate

Senator Kip Bateman’s legislation banning the sale or installation of equipment containing greenhouse gases passed the Senate today.

The bipartisan bill (A5583/S3919) would transition the State to less harmful alternatives by prohibiting hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and other gases that threaten the ozone.

“Moving to more environmentally benign refrigerants benefits the climate and reduces health risks to the public,” said Bateman (R-16). “Replacement gases are available and proven. I am hopeful this bill will soon be signed into law.”

Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are a form of greenhouse gases that contain hydrogen, fluorine and carbon. They are commonly used in various commercial and industrial applications.

The phase-out of HFCs required by Bateman’s measure would begin on July 1, 2020, becoming more extensive each year through 2024.
