Broad Support by Building Trades for Brian Hughes
Broad Support by Building Trades for Brian Hughes
Hughes continues huge show of force with formidable labor support
(Mercer County) – Today, Mercer County Executive Brian Hughes announced a continuing show of support from organized labor unions across the county. Nine of the county’s largest unions endorsed County Executive Hughes for re-election (list below).
“It means a great deal to earn the support of the hard-working men and women of organized labor.” said County Executive Hughes. “I have been fortunate to have formed a tremendous bond with the men and women of the building trades during my tenure as County Executive, which I’ve never taken for granted. My administration has always ensured that Mercer County projects are done by unions, which means they are done fairly, safely, and equitably for Mercer County families and taxpayers. Now, it’s time to take the gains we’ve made together and move forward to an even brighter future.”
The Hughes administration has a long history of working with the men and women of the building trades, most notably creating a landmark “direct hire” agreement with the Mercer County Buildings and Construction Trades Council that allows the county to directly employ trade members for county projects, putting more union labor to work than ever before. Notable projects include the ongoing curb and ramp project at county facilities to improve access for people with disabilities; renovated and created office space at the main administration building and the Superintendent of Elections offices; and installed the generator pad at the Office of the County Prosecutor.
“County Executive Hughes has always been a steadfast supporter of union labor,” said Wayne DeAngelo, president of the Mercer County Building and Construction Trades Council and IBEW Local 269 Business Manager. “Our brothers and sisters know they have a friend in Brian Hughes and labor is always there for one of our own. This massive show of support is indicative of our friendship with Brian Hughes.”
Among other major projects completed during Hughes’ tenure were the criminal courthouse project, the largest public project in Mercer history, the sustainable solar array field at Mercer County Community College, and the on-time and on-budget terminal improvements at Trenton-Mercer Airport.
