Brookdale’s Bankier Library Awarded Competitive Grant

Lincroft, NJ – Brookdale Community College’s Bankier Library was recently awarded the Resilient Communities competitive grant awarded to only 25 public and academic libraries throughout the country from the American Library Association, (ALA). This was an initiative of the ALA to help libraries engage their communities in programs and conversations that address the climate crisis.

In addition to receiving a monetary stipend, the Bankier Library will receive access to the Resilient Communities Programming Guide and promotional materials and be granted public performance rights to screen two documentary films, Decoding the Weather Machine and Fire + Flood.

Brookdale has planned fall community conversations on climate change through their Global Citizenship Program with three events in November: Thursday, November 12th, 11:45 am – 12:45 pm, via Zoom, Effects of Poverty on the Environment hosted by Dr. Terry Konn a Fulbright scholar who will discuss various impediments to the reduction and management of waste and its effect on public health; Monday, November 16th, 5:00 – 6:00 pm, via Zoom, Environmental Disaster Response in Sir Lanka and Haiti hosted by Professor Harry Compton. Having worked at the Environmental Protection Agency for 34 years he will share his extensive experience in responding to crises in diverse locations; and Tuesday, November 17th, 12 Noon – 1:00 pm, via Zoom, The Environmental Impact of a Border Wall hosed by Dr. Ashley Zampogna-Krug. A scholar in the field of immigration studies, Dr. Zampogan-Krug will address the polarizing and complex issue of a border wall from an environmental perspective. Brookdale’s Bankier Library will be setting a spring date for the streaming of Fire + Flood a documentary that tells the story of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and the fires in Santa Rosa, CA, two-near simultaneous climate-related disasters in the fall of 2017, through the voices of LGBTQ people who lived through them and were part of the community response.
