CAIR-NJ Calls for Hate Crime Probe of Verbal Abuse Targeting Muslim Woman in Front of Her House in Jersey City
(SOUTH PLAINFIELD, N.J., 3/19/2019) – The New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NJ) today called for a hate crime investigation of an incident in which a woman verbally-abused a Muslim woman who was wearing and Islamic head scarf, or hijab.
On February 15, a Muslim woman who wishes to not to be identified captured video of another woman, who was blocking her driveway, yelling at her to “Go back to your f***ing country.”
The woman, who was wearing a sweatshirt branded with a nearby school’s name, was cursing at the resident for filming her.

“Hateful acts of verbal abuse such as those allegedly carried out in Jersey City in February should not be tolerated,” said CAIR-NJ Executive Director James Sues. “We expect local law enforcement to conduct a full investigation and determine the appropriate action. Unfortunately, we are once again reminded of the poisonous political atmosphere that divides this country along religious and ethnic lines.”
In a published report, CAIR noted a 17 percent increase in bias-motivated incidents and a 15 percent increase in hate crimes against American Muslims since Trump took office.
