Congressman Chris Smith Co-Sponsors H.R. 20,
Richard L. Trumka PRO Act of 2023 to
Protect Workers’ Right to Organize

The New Jersey State AFL-CIO thanks and commends Congressman Chris Smith (R-04) for co-sponsoring the Richard L. Trumka PRO Act of 2023 to Protect Workers’ Right to Organize.

By co-sponsoring the PRO Act, Congressman Smith has become one of only two Republicans in the country to sponsor the PRO Act. Smith joins all nine of our state’s Democratic members of congress to back this crucial legislation, signaling that in New Jersey, support for working families is a bipartisan effort.

We appreciate Congressman Smith’s leadership, his support for New Jersey’s working families and his respect for the right to organize.  Representatives Jeff Van Drew (R-01) and Tom Kean (R-07) remain the only members of congress from New Jersey who refuse to sign on to the bill.

The PRO Act is a landmark labor law that would empower workers, strengthen civil rights, and be a vehicle towards fair treatment for workers across all trades and industries throughout our country.

The PRO Act would strengthen our woefully inadequate labor laws allowing working people to more effectively exercise their rights to organize and collectively bargain. Currently, employers routinely violate the National Labor Relations Act, preventing workers from accessing the higher standards of living and increased workplace safety provided by a union contract.
