Congressman Sires’ Statement Condemning the President’s National Emergency Declaration
(Washington, D.C.) – Congressman Sires released the following statement after President Trump announced he would be declaring a national emergency to divert funds to construct a border wall:
“This national emergency declaration is a blatant abuse of executive power and ignores the will of the American people. Time and time again, his archaic plan for a border wall was rejected because it is an ineffective waste of money. Even when his own party controlled the House and the Senate, President Trump was unable to find enough people who thought we should divert billions of dollars to his vanity project. The President himself stated that he did not need to declare this national emergency that will take funding from the military and drug interdiction programs. This temper tantrum by the President is a fake emergency that flies in the face of the constitution and tramples on the principles of congressional authority. I am joining my colleague Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX) in introducing legislation that would terminate the President’s national emergency declaration and restore some balance to the separation of power.”
