Congressman Sires’ Statement on Recent Events in Venezuela

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Congressman Sires released the following statement regarding Juan Guaidó declaring himself interim President of Venezuela. Juan Guaidó currently serves as President of the legitimately elected Venezuela National Assembly.

“Maduro’s illegitimate re-election cemented him as an authoritarian leader of Venezuela. He created a political vacuum where the National Assembly serves as the only legitimately elected political body in the country. His regime has left the Venezuelan people destitute through rampant inflation, economic collapse, the deterioration of democratic institutions, and the oppression of human rights,” said Congressman Sires.

“It is my hope that Mr. Guaidó will commit to restoring democracy to Venezuela and respect basic civil liberties and the rule of law. It is time for the Venezuelan people to berepresented by a democratic government. It is imperative that Venezuelans and their allies around the world work toward holding free, fair, and transparent elections, ushering in a new era of Venezuelan democracy.”
